Charlie, a skilled handyman, tells Sonya, one of his usual customers, that his boss has a side hustle business that performs the work for a specific job her family needed to get done.
Sonya never questioned that he could do the job. He did excellent work before for her family, and for the same employer.
Charlie asked for the full amount, because his boss wanted half up front. He demanded the rest immediately also.
The work needed to be done within two days. Sonya did trust him because of his history with her family. She gave him a check for an amount under $7,000.
Then the perfect storm arrived. Sonya’s legs did not function because of a health problem she had two months earlier. She heard and saw Charlie with another individual, who was helping with the job, laughing and having fun on some small equipment. She was not able to walk up to where they were working because her legs hurt too much and could not get them to take her where she needed to go.
Later, Sonya wished she could have walked that day.
Charlie did approximately $3,000 worth of damages on the area he worked on, and would not refund the money for the work he did not do.
Sonya already knew she would not be able to receive a refund for the machine hired.
That was $2,000.
Sonya and the relative that hired the handyman were both over sixty-five. This was an excessive amount of money they could not afford to lose. They both tried repeatedly to ask him to finish the job. He always promised to be there at a certain time after his regular job, but never kept his appointment.
Eventually, Charlie never returned the calls at all. Then they called his boss, Jairus, and politely asked him to reimburse them.
Jairus said he was not in any business or side hustle that did not have his name on any paperwork. He said that her family should have expected that.
Sonya insisted that from the very beginning Jairus was involved, according to Charlie.
Again, Jairus said he had no business deal of that kind with Charlie.
Sonya told Jairus, “Charlie always did good work before, and was honest about everything, why would her family not believe him now.”
Finally, Charlie did call Sonya. He was upset and his boss accused him, using a legal term.
She answered, ” I never said that. I only asked for my money back.”
Charlie then said, “I never said I was working for Jairus. I was working with someone else.”
“You said from the very beginning that you were working for Jairus on this job. Besides, you could have prevented a lot of trouble if you would have returned our calls.”
To this day , Sonya and her family were never refunded any money.
